History

One of the Algonquin tribes, the Minisink Indians first referred to the club area as “Roxiticus” or “meeting place,” since many Indian trails converged here. By the turn of the century, the area was commonly referred to as Millionaires’ Mountain. A wealthy investment banker, Walter P. Bliss, purchased the property to build his personal estate, Wendover. In the 1960s, the owners of Englewood Golf Club, Jerry Volpe and Mr. Bern Shanley, partnered to build and operate the estate as a golf club. Despite numerous setbacks, including a stock-market recession and a devastating fire that destroyed the original mansion in 1979, Roxiticus Golf Club grew to be one of the most beautiful boutique family clubs in New Jersey, largely through Shanley’s unwavering vision, determination and dedication.
